How to verify your carbon emissions project

How to verify your carbon emissions project

What is verification?

Verifying a carbon emissions project involves a rigorous process to ensure it effectively reduces or removes greenhouse gas emissions. This process is vital for the project's credibility and its eligibility for carbon credits or offsets, as well as ensuring that the results of the project can be counted towards regulations and requirements. The exact steps for each project will vary, but include some or all of the following:

  • Site visits – If your project has a physical site, it may be visited to ensure that the work taking place matches what has been stated.

  • Data reviews – An in-depth review of all the data monitored throughout the project, ensuring that the amounts calculated are accurate and consistent.

  • Emission Reduction Calculation - The verifier calculates emissions reductions by comparing baseline emissions (what would have occurred without the project) to actual post-project emissions.

  • Additionality - Additionality is assessed to determine if the project's emissions reductions go beyond what would have happened without the project, a crucial criterion for many carbon standards.

  • Many more – These steps alone will not be enough to verify your project, making up just part of the process.

Therefore, no project can be successful without effective verification – meaning it is absolutely essential that your process is trusted and reliable.

Project certification

In addition to verification, something else which should be high up on your priority list is certification. There are many different types of certification, with factors such as project type and geographical location being key considerations. Gold Standard for the Global Goals, often referred to as simply Gold Standard, is considered to be one of the leading certifications, due to the high standards and rigorous testing required to achieve this certification.

SustainCert is a recommended partner of Gold Standard, meaning working with us provides supreme peace of mind that your project can successfully be certified.
