Do Land Use and Forestry (LUF) projects need to contribute to the Compliance Buffer?
Yes. All LUF projects must contribute 20% of their emission reduction issuance to a pooled Compliance Buffer to deal with the risk of non-permanence. Projects with activities resulting in avoided emissions do not need to contribute to the Compliance Buffer.
Gold Standard has a compliance buffer that is nothing but a pool to which all projects must contribute 20% of their emission reductions. This is a reserve for cases wherein carbon is no longer sequestered due to an event like forest burning or unplanned clearing. In other words, LUF projects are always issued only 80% of the emission reductions that they request for certification; the other 20% go into this compliance buffer pool.
